Ecclesiastes 2

Teacher: Matt Krick

Series: Ecclesiastes - Does Life Hold Meaning?

Category: Peace

Discussion Questions:

What resonated most with you about this passage and teaching?

What did the writer of Ecclesiastes pursue in his quest for happiness and meaning? What did he find as he pursued those things? What did he conclude?

What have you pursued with great determination that was ultimately fulfilling? What have you pursued that was not fulfilling?

Have you experienced a period of deconstruction, where nothing makes sense, either in your life or the life of someone close to you? How did that work out? Or is it still going on? What were/are the challenges during the process?

In what ways do these quotes speak to you?

C.S. Lewis quote:

The [places where] we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing. These things—the beauty, the memory of our own past—are good images of what we really desire; but if they are mistaken for the thing itself they turn into dumb idols, breaking the hearts of their worshipers. For they are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.”

Other quotes:

"Mistaking the vessel for the treasure."

"The thing behind the thing is the presence of God."
