How Do You Look Down?

Passage: Luke 18:9-14

Teacher: Matt Krick

Series: 3 Years with Jesus: Stories Jesus Told

Discussion Questions

What resonated most with you about this passage and teaching?

Compare and contrast the prayers of the Pharisee and the tax-collector.

Why might people look down on other people? In our culture, who is it okay to "look down" on?

How would you live if you base your value on your works? On God's grace? Discuss grace and works, about "salvation by grace" vs "work out your salvation."

Is it hard for people in our culture to accept grace? For us personally? What is behind the need to earn acceptance?

Are you uncomfortable with any of the gifts/strengths/talents you've been given? What are the challenges in "carrying your cards" with grace? What does it mean to steward well the gifts/talents we've been given? What are some of the good works you believe God has given you to do?

Empathy exercise: have each person think of someone they look down on, then silently take the group through the questions:

  • Who am I?
  • Where am I?
  • What's wrong?
  • What's the remedy?
