Discussion Questions:

What resonated most with you about this passage and teaching?

Why might a nobleman come to Jesus with this request? What obstacles to asking would the nobleman have to deal with? How can you relate?

The man took Jesus at his word, and headed home. The passage says that the man's son was healed, and his whole household believed. Why might Jesus have made the comment about people needing signs in order to believe?

"Be careful not to mistake the signs for the thing itself." What does this mean? What examples come to mind of people doing this? What happens when people do this with God?

What do you think the Galileans around Jesus thought about the nobleman's request? Did you learn anything about yourself from the story about Mother Teresa and the pushy/rich Indian couple with the camera?

Talk about the "poverty of wealth". What things do people want deeply, that the world (money, power, success, fame) cannot provide?

What are some responses that people have when their prayers aren't answered the way they want? When God doesn't heal us in the ways we pray for, are we open to God's offer of other kinds of healing, in our hearts?

How do you respond to the question: "What change God is inviting you into?”

In what ways do you hope to integrate elements of this text into your life this week?
