Philippians 2:14-18 Discussion Questions

“Do everything without grumbling or arguing.” This is a hard word to live into.

  • Share something that you struggle with complaining about.
    • Being grateful will always lead us away from complaint. Share what you are grateful for.
  • What do you think it looks like to be free from arguing? Even the arguments you build in your head to defend something you think you are right about.

Paul is pointing back to the people of Israel who grumbled in the wilderness. He is encouraging the Philippians that just because that is the way the story was, their story can be different.

  • What is something from your story that God is inviting you to redeem and write a better story?

Look at the art piece from Burning Man. Share your thoughts on it. What does it evoke in you?

  • In what ways do you see fear as a motivator in your life?
  • How about love? How might we become people who are more motivated by God’s love in us?

Reflect too on the these Hafiz quotes. How do they strike you?

  • “Complaint Is only possible while living in the suburbs of God.”
  • “Even after all this time, the sun never says to the earth, ‘You owe me.’ Look what happens with a love like that. It lights the whole sky.”
  • “Know this: If God should shine His lovelight on your heart, I promise you’ll shine brighter than a dozen suns.”

On Sunday I shared about my new friend Arie from Iran. God is giving me the opportunity to be a welcoming presence of love and light in his life. God is challenging me in many other ways to shine in my family, our church and our world.

  • In what ways do you sense God is inviting you to shine in your areas of influence?

Pray for each other to be free from grumbling and arguing. Pray for our church in the same way. Pray also for our country and our world.
